It was again a pouring night. We arrived at Kuala Lipis at about
2 a.m. where we
were received on the platform by the Secretary to the
Resident and allotted
quarters. I Was'in the party invited to the
Residency where we were received in
person "by the. British-RsSident and his
domestic staff with the greatest
sympathy; arid hospitality, including- a
sumptuous dinner, a hot bath, and a "bed
which banished care. The next
day we were scattered to the four winds, my own
"route being to
Kuala Lumpur - where preparations for my-next evacuation were
shortly to
begin.
Major Kidd with a nucleus of Europeans remained at Kuala Krai until
the military
authorities took over the town at the end of the week,/
The Adviser then set up his headquarters at the frontier village of
Gua Musang
where civil administration continued till Sunday" the 4th
January, four weeks
after the commencement of the war.
On that date, the civil government, followed "by the Army, withdrew
south,in
sympathy it is understood, with the events on the West Coast
