[gave] lecture to Eng. Soc. [Engineering Society] on Science, Democracy and Lit. [Literature]. At 4:30 [had] tea chez [= at the house of] Sah house. [At] 5 [went] to bank and got out 10,000. At 6:15 lectured to all students on Sci. in the War Effort of U.N. [the United Nations]. Feast chez Sah in evening.

Sun. May 14th. Lectured at 7:00 on Biochemistry and Morphogenesis to chemistry and biology students. Used my book['s] pictures. ΦΦ [Photographed] the University and Fu Wên Miao [temple]. Worked at home. Lunch [with] Arthur Li [Li Qingyun]. Three meetings of all Profs. Talked on Work of Office [=SBSCO]. Tea. Dinner chez Wang Teh-Yao.

Mon. May 15th. Breakfast chez Mrs. Hutley on verandah [with] lovely view over the valley (reminiscent of Deeside or N. Wales), and pagoda. Hughes' $5000 not wanted immediately, so send T/T [= Tao Tsang / Daozang 道藏, a large collection of Taoist texts] later. She [Mrs. Hutley] was here 16 years with the Hugheses [Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Hughes].

To the Liao family, gave HY [Liao Hongying] letter and money, and [was] entertained in nice old courtyard with trees by her eldest brother, the scholar, 廖荻甫 [Liao Difu], now about 60. [Went] to RC [Roman Catholic] mission, Fr. Lödding and three sisters, very nice.

[At] 10:30 lect. [lectured] to [econ.] economics gp. [group] on Internat. Polit. Sit’n [International Political Situation]. Lunch with Benjamin Chou [Zhou Bianming] and family, and Chu family. At 2:30 lectured on Chem. Constitution and Biol. Specificity [Chemical Constitution and Biological Specificity]. Nice young man Huang Hou-chih [was] keen on organisers. [Had] tea at the economist Huang's family. Dinner with the professors chez Sah. Repairs on shoes, 350.

Tu. May 16th. Up before 5am. Got away from Changting around 7am. Seen off by the Acting President and Ling Yung 林鎔 [Lin Rong], the botanist, going to Yungan; [the character] 鎔 [rong] [means] to smelt metal. Also Huang (Li) Chia-Ping 黃 李家斌 [Huang (Li) Jiabin] and Mrs. Ko 柯 候菊蘭 [Ke Hou Julan], wife of General Ko 柯遠芬 [Ke Yuan-Fen]. Also a gendarme [= policeman] who couldn't be kept off, but was useful afterwards. Country wild, mountainous, apple-green and dark-blue like Ireland. Road very little used and narrow and winding.
