The followng was tried because out of 13 long radicles which had been thrice ‹dubbed› «touched or rubbed» «on theirtipst6 Dec. 1' 1878» with n. of silver & much blackend, 6 had tips bent at rt ∠ or hooked, shwng tht one side «of apex» hd ben killed, «& these» all grew out sub-horizntally, as if Geotropism destryed — like Cieleski— Sachs1 disputes, but these neither know of effects of oblique slices, & we now know tht irritatig one side «of apex» determines bendng. Therfor cuttng off tip tranversy probaly destrys th coordintng pwer & ‹radicle› «they» grow lawlessly.— I «fully»believe frm notes tht ‸t7 12/13 grew out sub-horizntally, certainly 6/13 did sot8

Dec. 4th    7 long radicle were fixed horzntally & on tip of each a dab, «[ Temp. abut 66° kept in dark on Chimny Piece]» about 2 mmt9 (1 1/2 / 20 of inch) in length of thick «olive» oil & Lamp-black (used because at Hand) & 4t10 «Control»t11 left, with no dabs .The latter «became» bent, after 8° 30't12 & hd tips turnd more or less downwads, & only 1 with black tip .[After 24° «frm puttng on dabs» all white tips considerly bent down., 1t13 of black tips coniderably 2 a little: most of th radicles were «at first» 45 m.m long, & 1 had incresed drng th above 24° 5 m.m, & anothr 7 m.m., & all had incresed; & on follng 24° «thy had» incresed in sam manner «& to abut sam degree, so that gresed tips» — ‹no› had not stoppd grwth. [After 48°t14 «frm th first (ie. Dec. 6th)» tips of most «of blackend radicles» turnd perpendendiclarily down or obliques; so blackend tips (over)t15
