Of Musick.

1. First some \one/ sound must bee pitched upon, to wch all
ye musick must bee more especially refered yn to any
other sound, (as number to an unit) let this sound be
called ye Cliffe or Key of ye song.

2. Then consider [illeg] ye sound wch is one or two or thre
8ths above or below yt key (for Musick seldome takes a
larger compasse yn 3 8ths) The cheife of [illeg] |w| ch is ye
8th next above ye Key. 3.Each of these Eights are
alike divided into ꝑ [illeg] |t|s, t |f|or ye [illeg] |t|s of ye higher eight
are [of] an Eight abo [illeg] |v|e their correspondent ꝑts [illeg] |o|f ye
lower eight. so yt ye ꝑts of one Eight knowne give all ye
rest, ye other Eights being but a repetition of yt . [illeg] |in| [illeg] | [a] |
more base or treble sound. (Hence s [illeg] |o|me call an 8th ye
largest consonant.) Let this division of an 8th bee
called ye Mode of ye song.

4. This Eight i [illeg] |s| first divided into a 5t & 4th, ye
fift being next above ye Key; to wch it [illeg] adds so much
sweetnesse yt should this fift bee omitted in any song, ye
Key would [illeg] |i|mparte its name & nature [illeg] |t|o some sound
w [illeg] |ch| ha [illeg] |th| a fift above it. And since all ha [illeg] |r|mony
w [illeg] |t| hout a fi [illeg] |f|t is flat, therefore the key must necessa-
rily have a fift above i [illeg] |t|. ✝ < insertion from f 137v > ✝ here annex a discourse of ye motion of strings sounding an 8t
5t & 4th & of ye Logarithmes of those strings, or distances of ye notes.

5. An 8th is next divided into a third major & 6t
minor, & lastly into a 3d minor & 6t major. * < insertion from f 137v > * these are all ye concords conteined in an Eight. Hereto
annex a discour [illeg] |se| of ye 3ds & 6ts
